Story and Photos by James Walker, Jr.
How better to conclude a week long festival than with the infectious
Latin sounds of one of Chicago's finest bands, Chevere.
This group has been together since 1975,and surprisingly only recorded one CD,
Secret Dream, in 2005. They owe it to their public for a 2nd disc. Let's hope it
happens soon.
Their appearance at The Gorton culminated John Moulder's Chi-town Jazz series
that was organized to raise funds for several Chicago Area charities. This event
also ended Gorton's 22nd "Cabin Fever Jazz Season."
This nine-piece band was founded by drummer Alejo Poveda with Grammy Award
winner keyboardist and harmonica player Howard Levy orchestrating the on stage
activities.
Highlights of this concert included Levy's "El Cojo" which resulted in three
young ladies rising to their feet to dance the "samba" during this spirited
number. During the second set, bassist Eric Hochberg favored the audience with
vocals on the blues-tinged "Telegram of Love". That was a pleasant surprise
seeing a different side of this fine bassist.
They concluded this fine afternoon of Latin sounds the the title track from the
CD, "Secret Dream." Percussion section of Ruben Alvarez and Joe Rendon were
featured. Trumpeter Mark Ohlsen produced a unique sound as he blew into the
valves of his instrument.
Although they don't perform together often enough, those in attendance at the
Gorton were very appreciative of this first class band.
