Story and Photos by James Walker, Jr. Ok, we lost out on our bid for the 2016 Olympics, but we still have the best jazz in the world. On any given night of the week, one can easily find exceptional jazz all over this great city , unparalleled in most cities worldwide. This writer recently revisited the MNN's weekly jam session at the Checkerboard Lounge on the Southside where they hold court each Monday from 7pm to 11pm with a feature guest artist, amateur open mic, and a pro jam session. This set was hosted by one of Chicago's finest vocalist, Joan Collaso. In addition to her duties as MC, Joan couldn't resist rendering a few numbers of her own, plus backing up feature vocalist Yvonne Gage. The evening began with the "house band" consisting of guitarist Keith Henderson, bassist Mike Stirling, drummer Malcolm Banks, percussionist Tony "Toca" Carpenter, and keyboardist Jasper Stone warming up the audience with a couple of "funky" tunes. These guys appeared to be really having a great time together before bringing Ms. Gage up the stage. Ms. Gage has performed with Ramsey Lewis and recorded as a backup vocalist on many of R&B vocalist R. Kelly's CDs. In addition, she can be heard on commercials and jingles. On this evening, her playlist consisted primarily of R&B selections but on Billie Holiday's "Good Morning Heartache", she was at her best. It was also on this number that saxophonist James Perkins joined the fray and wowed the audience with a spectacular extended solo. Perkins is one of Chicago's most underrated and under appreciated musicians, but often can be seen backing up national artists during their appearance in Chicago. Ms.Collaso and her daughter Razine, assisted Yvonne during her set with background vocals. Yvonne and Joan reversed this role on a Jill Scott song. These ladies worked so well together and this small, but appreciative audience were thoroughly entertained. Both Joan and Yvonne have such a natural stage presence which obviously is a result of their years of experience performing. The evening concluded with an array of guest artist jamming with the house band. Such artist included vocalists Paris Robinson, Jo Jo Robinson, Andre, Yohan, and Dawn; flutist Tiona; and drummer Tony. As usual, this was an opportunity for musicians to just join in and have a good time. MNM's founder, guitarist and vocalist Bernard Crump (who earlier jammed on Bobby Womack's "That's the Way I Feel About You") indicated the group would add another segment to their weekly program by mentoring novice artists each week at the start of the evening. This is what's so unique about this group, their endeavor to work with young people in addition to the support they render each other. Keep up the good work MNM!!!
