Derek Henderson

Henderson, often seen in the background working with some of Chicago's finest Jazz ensembles, led a group that included bassist Will Howard, guitarist Marco Villarreal, keyboardist Leandro Lopez-Varady and guest saxophonist Tommy Bradford.

Derek opened the set with an extended solo, without the assistance of his band mates. That solo certainly got the crowd in a festive mood, as Derek's colleagues joined in as he played Duke Ellington's classic "Caravan" (written by Juan Tizol). What a start! With all the ensemble members soloing, while bassist Howard distinguished himself quietly in the background with nice bass lines. Howard also differentiated himself from most bassists with his "bodyless" upright electric bass that this writer has only seen a minute few Chicagoans use. Derek close this number with rapid fire action. These guys were bamming from the onset.

One of the many first set highlights occurred during their rendition of another Duke classic, "In a Sentimental Mood." Saxophonist Bradford set the early tone on this piece, followed by some unique "picking" by guitarist Villarreal. His unique style on this number was reminiscent of the great Stanley Jordan, as he picks with both hands from the neck of the guitar instead of using one hand on its base. Naturally, keyboardist Varady joined in for an outstanding solo. They simply took turns with exceptional solos on this song.

Miles' "All Blues" concluded this well-played set that allowed each band member to showcase their individual skills, in addition to their cohesive playing as a unit. And believe me, hey had a lot to put on display.
