Story and Photos by James Walker It's not often that the "backup" band out shines the featured performer, but that was the case when the Chicago Jazz Ensemble(CJE), under the direction of world class trumpeter Jon Faddis , did just that when it featured vocalist Patti Austin last month at the Harris Theater. Austin had her highlight moments, but during CJE's initial first half set, and while backing the Grammy Winner, Faddis's group was simply spectacular. It was obvious from the top that this would be a special CJE concert when Faddis opened the set with a touching rendition of the "National Anthem," as a tribute to recently elected "President" Barack Obama. Leave it to Faddis, with those high trumpet notes, to arouse the crowd's spirits with a spellbounding performance. Faddis, being a Mel Lewis/Thad Jones disciple, chose many of the first set's selections from that big band's songbook. He even featured himself on the first selection, "Three And One." What a pleasant surprise, as Faddis usually shines the spotlight on Ensemble members without favoring the audience with his superb playing. He also featured baritone saxophonist Brian Sjoerdinga on this number. Bassist Dan Anderson also contributed a nice extended solo on this piece. Throughout the remainder of the first set, Faddis afforded opportunities for trombonist Tracy Kirk, saxophonists Jarred Harris, Pat Mallinger, guitarist Frank Dawson, trumpeters Art Hoyle, Pharez Whitted, and drummer (and newly appointed musical director) Dana Hall to demonstrate why this band is considered by many to be one of Chicago's best. Most (if not all) of the above mentioned soloists front their own bands in addition to their esteemed work with CJE. Ms. Austin's set comprised primairly of movie and show tunes and brought a lot of attention to this "diva's" sassy delivery. She possseses strong vocal chords and interacts with the viewers throughout her performance. Nevertheless, following the strong opening act of CJE made her task a difficult one. Her version of "Swanee" was perhaps the favorite of the crowd while the friendly bantering between Patti and Faddis on the final number also drew a positive response from this large appreciative audience. Overall, this was a excellent evening of music with CJE performing at a level that seems to be the norm for this group of exceptional musicians led by the affable Jon Faddis. Ms. Austin had her moments, but it was CJE that "carried the day." CJE's next Chicago appearance will feature world class Cuban born multi-reedist Paquito D' Rivera. Again, the Harris Theater will be the venue for this December 12, 2008 concert. For ticket information refer to their website at www.chicagojazzensemble.com. |
