Story and Photos by James Walker This listener arrived at Andy's around 8:30pm toward the end of Frank's set (not sure which one because he was literally playing from 5:00pm to 1:00am) as the band began playing "Bye Bye Blackbird." Catalano indicated to the packed Tuesday night crowd that he first played that tune with the legendary tenor saxophonist Von Freeman when he was eleven years old. Although he's now a "young" veteran at the age of 29, Catalano also shares his experience with the group of "young" turks that accompanied him on the CD and at the release party at Andy's.Frank's young burners, primarily from the southern suburbs, included Scott Williams on piano, Davon Nelson on drums, Adam Whitson on bass, Chris Paquette on percussions, and guest guitarist Dean Anber. All of these young men are only in their 20s yet they play with confidence and skill. Much of that has to be attributed to Catalano who has taken these young musicians under his wings and nutured them. Just as "Vonski"(Von Freeman) did for him when he was just a teenager. Catalano also gained valuable experience as a teen when he went on the road with the great Tony Bennett. What a thrill that must have been to play side by side with one of the all time great jazz vocalist. Frank paid homage to Bennett with a fine version of "Fly Me To The Moon," a selection that Tony never leaves the stage without singing. Frank dedicated this song to his mom who was sitting in front of the stage with a huge smile on her face during the entire evening. One could see the pride she has for her budding star son. Throughout this set, Catalano allowed his bandmates plenty opportunities to express themselves, and that they did. Special mention must be given to pianist Scott Williams as he was on" fire" during the entire set. This young man can really play. It seems like Chicago continues to turn out exceptional keyboardist. Keep a close eye on him in the future. If this group of talented musicians is an indication, the future of jazz in Chicago is in good hands. And Catalano has an exceptional work ethic. Upon completing his gig at Andy's , he was off to New York on Wednesday, Philadelphia on Thursday, and back in Chicago on Friday for his gig at the Green Velvet for the Three Generations of Tenors with Von Freeman and Ari Brown in conjuction with the JVC Jazz Festivat, which Frank helped to coordinate. What a worldwind week for this banging tenor player. |
